Year-End Wrap Up

A  few short weeks after our signature Giving for Joy Gala fundraising event, we jumped right into the reason we do the fundraising!  Because of all of you generous donors we provided another retreat for bereaved parents. Just yesterday (Monday) eight more parents flew back home after spending a week on Kaua’i.

How do we tackle the hard work of healing?  It’s next to impossible to capture the essence of what happens when parents come ready to work and bond over shared grief, struggles, and healing. Instead I’ll attempt to give a snapshot of the structure of the retreat.

During our time together we work through the themes of Honoring the Past, Living in the Moment, and Embracing the Future. Each morning after breakfast, a quote kicks off the day’s theme which is followed by an activity that elicits further reflection and discussion.  From there, most days parents are free to relax and sink into joy and peace as they explore the island and connect with other parents. In the afternoon, we gather for a family style dinner and evening activity. In each activity we do, we weave honoring the memory of the deceased children into embracing present day joys of life.  And here’s the beautiful thing…

As each individual does the healing work alongside other parents doing the same, they build trust and a safe space to ask and share with one another. They swap sad stories, they laugh over funny ones.  They ask each other things like, “What do you say when people ask how many children you have?” They build a new ‘ohana (family) of support and love.

Ready to see a few pictures of what it looks like???

WE KICK OFF EVERY RETREAT WITH A TRIP TO LIMAHULI GARDEN WHERE WE NOT ONLY HONOR THE PAST OF EACH INDIVIDUAL CHILD, BUT OF THE ISLAND OF KAUA’I THAT PROVIDES SO MUCH HEALING.

THIS CROWD FOUND PLENTY TO DO ON THE BEACH EVERY DAY.  SURFING, BOOGIE BOARDING, SNORKELING, KAYAKING, CATCHING A FEW RAYS. NO MATTER THE ACTIVITY, THEY ENJOYED EACH OTHER.

WHETHER IT WAS SHARING MEALS, WORKING ON ACTIVITIES, OR SIMPLY TALKING….SO MANY HOURS WERE SPENT HUDDLED AROUND THIS TABLE.
MOST OF ALL, THEY CONNECTED. CONNECTED OVER SHARED LOSS, SHARED LAUGHS, AND BUILDING SHARED MEMORIES OF RECONNECTING TO JOY IN LIFE.

THANKS TO YOU  bereaved parents rediscovered happiness, found healing and connected with other grieving parents through two retreats this year. And we are so very grateful!
